Le Spectre de la rose (The Spirit of the Rose) is a short ballet about a young girl who dreams of dancing with the spirit of a souvenir rose from her first ball. The ballet was written by Jean-Louis Vaudoyer who based the story on a verse by Théophile Gautier and used the music of Carl Maria von Weber's piano piece Aufforderung zum Tanz (Invitation to the Dance) as orchestrated by Hector Berlioz.
The Afternoon of a Faun (French: L'Après-midi d'un faune) is a ballet choreographed by Vaslav Nijinsky for the Ballets Russes, and was first performed in the Théâtre du Châtelet in Paris on 29 May 1912. Nijinsky danced the main part himself. The ballet is set to Claude Debussy 's symphonic poem Prélude à l'après-midi d'un faune.
This version recounts the story of Rose Latulipe, a young and frivolous girl who loved to dance. On the night of Mardi Gras, a stranger showed up at the Latulipe house and danced with Rose until the stroke of midnight. The stranger is revealed to be the Devil. According to some versions, the Devil disappeared, taking Rose with him to Hell.
Invitation to the Dance ( Aufforderung zum Tanz [a] ), Op. 65, J. 260, is a piano piece in rondo form written by Carl Maria von Weber in 1819. It is also well known in the 1841 orchestration by Hector Berlioz. It is sometimes called Invitation to the Waltz, but this is a mistranslation of the original.
