A Mortician's Tale is a nice little free game that taught me a lot about the funeral industry. Cave Story is a decent Metroidvania that is considered to be one of the earliest and most influential indie games. It has a remastered version on Steam that costs money but I played the original free version recently and had no complaints.

Since we lost pc games dot download dot com, I've struggled to find a similar site that's even remotely reliable. Skidrow has pulled through a few times, but mostly it's an endless string of redirects or dead links. Often they don't have the games I'm looking for.

Not steam, but you could start claiming the free weekly games on Epic Game Store. If you have an Amazon prime account you also get free games through twitch gaming. The humble bundles are good for getting games cheap. Or sign up to Xbox game pass for PC and get a massive library of games for a tiny monthly fee.
Yeah, and it was safe all those years, but guess what, they started stealing uploads from igg games wich is full of malware most times , and their upload speeds were horrible. Also the ads were redirecting to malware sites.
