Because the most recent version of optifine available is for 47.1.43 and that's a review version, so no you cannot use optifine and forge for any version of forge after 47.1.43 and even if you do downgrade your forge to accommodate, some 1.20.1 mods are incompatible with it, i found that out trying forge 47.0.35 most good 1.20.1 mods like aether and twilight forest need 47.1 or higher to work ...
1.20.1 crashing, optifine is compatible with current version of forge, however still has problems.
OptiFine is not suited for modded environments after 1.12.2, unless you SPECIFICALLY make your modpack around OptiFine. Also, the latest stable version of OptiFine for 1.20.1 was released 2 months ago, so it didn't "just come out".
I tried going to the original optifine page, the update came out a week ago from what I know I am just curious how people are playing on 1.20.2 with Optifine but the version doesn't seem to be available?

hello i want to play minecraft 1.20.4 but there isnt the optifine for it why minecraft 1.20.2 1.20.3 1.20.4 dosent have optifine???
has anyone found a fix for optifine not working on custom modpacks for 1.20.1 yet? no matter what i do i cannot get it to work! its weird because lots of the most popular modpacks rn are on 1.20.1 and have working optifine :/
Optifine 1.20.2 came out not long ago but optifine 1.20.3 should also work on 1.20.4 since the only change made was a line of code to fix a data loss bug so all 1.20.3 mods should technically also work on 1.20.4
What you should do is use something like ViaVersions and OptiFabric and use Optifine 1.20.1, so you can play 1.20.2 servers and such. I haven't tested to see if this works, but in theory it should. Reply reply
for optifine parity, the fabulously optimized and additive modpacks are great. for just performance, go with adrenaline. the fabric wiki has its own optifine parity list. you don't need starlight anymore with 1.20. you may not want distant horizons. you may also like to try nvidium, but it disables itself when shaders are present.
