Owner of fontspace.com here. Both 1001fonts and fontspace are usually pretty accurate about the license type, but there are occasionally errors and it's best to verify yourself. Each font's license is explicitly stated on the font detail page, and usually there is some form of license document in the download.
Pay attention to the licenses on FontSpace though as they have both personal-use only and commercial-use fonts for free. Also, check the license you get in the download as I've found a couple where the font in the download (the one from the author, which you should trust above the FontSpace one) disagreed with the one from FontSpace.
Fonts are pretty safe to download. Most sites are legit. Plus Macs have decent antivirus protection to stop you from killing your computer with malware. Some sites that I have used are: dafont. 1001freefonts. fontspace. urbanfonts. There are a ton more sites too. You can google specific fonts too if you want something in particular
Fontspace is good, and you really don't need to be worried about getting viruses from fonts. As long as the files you're opening are .otf or .ttf, you'll be fine.

Avoiding Piracy: Reputable Free Font Sites. I know that fontsquirrel.com and fonts.google.com make strong efforts to only have 100% genuine, legitimate free fonts. I also know there are plenty of sites out there that have what the claim to have "free fonts" which actually are pirated copies of commercial fonts. How reputable is 1001fonts.com?
Make sure she only uses reputable font sites. Dafont, Fontspace, and Fontsquirrel are all 100% Safe, as I have never had any viruses, etc from them. The ones to worry about have .exe installer files instead of just having the fonts themselves. And if you click on banner ads you can also get viruses. 4.
