With the last iPhone update it changed all my Canadian area codes to US. So when people phone me from 306 area code it reads united states.
I live in Saskatchewan Canada - area code 306. I just upgraded to the new iPhone SE. I have the latest available IOS. Calls to my phone (which are not in my contacts) show the phone number (indicating it is long distance with the +1) as originating from the United States. The call is not long distance and it originated from the same town.
The callers will often use number spoofing to pretend they are calling from a legitimate business. The correct course of action is to hang up on them, repeatedly if needed. Avoid phishing emails, fake 'virus' alerts, phony support calls, and other scams - Apple Support. Definitely a scam.
I scrolled through my recent calls and it looks like the numbers that are affected have the province of Saskatchewan 306 area code. Any 1-800 type numbers do not show United States. I just updated my phone yesterday and my carrier and region are correct.
To block calls from a specific area code on your iPhone: Open Contacts. Create a new contact with "+1 (xxx)," where "xxx" is the area code. Save it. Open the contact, scroll down, and tap "Block this Caller" in red. Check-in Settings > Phone > Blocked Contacts to confirm it's blocked. That's it!

Caller ID now shows all calls as United States on iOS 10. After updating my phone to iOS 10.0.1, all incoming phone calls, local or long distance now show the location as "United States", rather than the City/State, etc. as was standard on prior iOS versions.
