It's quite a bit more involved and requires some knowledge of how things work. Proctorio can't directly detect virtual machines as it is only a Chrome extension. I'm taking a college class and the professor requires Proctorio, it seems EXTREMELY shady, it feels like a keylog but even worse. The reviews on this extension are mostly negative, but I'm not that surprised since I'm sure no one enjoys using this extension.

She tried to copy and paste something into google and it said “clipboard blocked by proctorio” which was really alarming to me since my phone wasn’t connected to the WiFi or anything.

PROCTORIO IS NOT A JOKE Really take caution with what you’re doing when taking an exam. I did summer school at my local CC and we used proctorio. It checks up on everything from sound, camera, screen, etc. Don’t challenge it because it’s a sophisticated anti-cheat system. Yep not thrilled.
Proctorio also notifies you before entering an exam of any information being recorded (and requires acknowledgment). It will also be clear that Proctorio is running because you will be guided through a series of pre-checks (depending on the settings chosen by the testing institution) to verify connection speed, etc., before the exam starts.
