Another vaccine uses whole, live attenuated parasites but carries a strong risk of full infection. In this study, the vaccine made from genetically modified parasites creates an immune response in human volunteers and did not lead to development of malaria, or significant symptoms or side effects.
Researchers are targeting a key protein involved in this process, in an attempt to stop the parasite. They found that interfering with this protein slows the escape of the parasite from red blood cells, reducing the rate of infection and making it easier for the body to shut it down. The research findings were published July 6 in PLOS Pathogens.

A new study just out reveals that HIV takes hold in the human body with the help of cells that usually work to heal, not kill. HIV invades the body through genital or rectal mucous membranes. Exactly how that occurs on a molecular level was not understood until now. The study reports a common mucosal cell may be responsible for increasing the ability of HIV to infect human immune cells.
