For online, you could do 1400pixels x 2100pixels at 72dpi and be fine. TL;DR: A) Traditional movie poster aspect ration is 2x3 B) 27.5inches x 40.5inches at 300dpi for print C) 1400pixels x 2100pixels at 72dpi for web. Really that could be said for any size, where you'd never put significant details too close to the edge anyway. For 24x36, it's essentially the same ratio as 27x40, so if they wanted to print it at the smaller size later, the work could be scaled without significant cropping, and the sizes are close enough that I don't imagine it would ...
This is for Home Videos mainly but I guess it should apply everywhere. What are the ideal dimensions or aspect ratio for a proper poster or background photo? Many photos seem to be off centered and it takes many trials and errors to get it the way I want it. I could not find this information anywhere.

As the other redditor suggested, if you have to scale it up, you're much better off doing this in a vector program like Inkscape rather than any raster program. Vector scales with no pixelation.
