The install instructions will tell you if a mod needs forge or not. The other option is modloader, which is older but still used by a few mods. It's less functional than forge as I understand it (I'm not a mod author) but still capable and is the original (or nearly so) mod API for Minecraft.

The installer window for Optifine is for if your installing Optifine to Vanilla only. Otherwise make sure you have the installation of Forge directed to the default location (redirecting might be possible but I think the Universal or other files are better for that).

I wanted to play a modpack with forge 36.2.0 and install optifine G8 (compatible with forge 36.1.0) in the mod folder but it doesn't work, the game crash, do anyone know if there is a compatible version forge 36.2.0 (or any other optimization mod) ? thx
