PS CS 2 does the batch, then I cannot open the new files, they are all there . in a new folder, size is correct, and they are.jpg files. However it is not . possible to see a thumbnail and neither do they open. In Bridge the files . suggest only that they should open with "system 32" and Photoshop is not . displayed on the list..

On a Mac, open the folder you have the files in. In the top right hand corner there is a dialogue box, type jpg in it, that is it. All your jpg files, and only those, will be there.

Go into Photoshop or a relatively modern freeware / open source image editing program (Picasa, GIMP, whatever you like). Only one minor adjustment ... JPG files do NOT loose any information. when being 'saved' ... you can copy a jpg from one disk to another 100 times without any further loesses. JPG files DO loose information when the jpg-compression is applied on an image (this happenes the first time in your camera ... here's where you loose some information).
jpg images do NOT degrade with each manipulation, they degrade with each SAVE to jpg. It's the compression during the save that causes IQ loss. (But take a jpg photo and copy it, now open the copy, do a minor change, and save it 100 times, I'm willing to bet you won't be able to tell the difference between the original and the heavily saved jpg ...
Here's my problem: They won't open! I . can get the JPEGs open, but I'm having no luck at all with the TIFs or PSD files. They were . originally saved on a Windows computer in PS7, but that machine won't even admit that . the CDs have any files on them at all. My Mac will show me that the files are there, but . won't open them.
