Optifine is a tool available for Java Minecraft which provides more festures and better control of the graphics of the game and provides for the use of shader programs to change the visuals of the game. Optifine offers many graphical improvements without using shaders but when using shaders the game can take on a whole new view.
Because the most recent version of optifine available is for 47.1.43 and that's a review version, so no you cannot use optifine and forge for any version of forge after 47.1.43 and even if you do downgrade your forge to accommodate, some 1.20.1 mods are incompatible with it, i found that out trying forge 47.0.35 most good 1.20.1 mods like aether and twilight forest need 47.1 or higher to work ...

I've always known Optifine doesn't go along modded Minecraft. For some reason I started wondering about and found this ideas Potentially any mod because Optifine is a closed source, highly invasive, non-Forge mod which hacks the entire rendering system that almost all mods use, and Optifine could break anything with any update.
Double click the optifine jar and it’ll give you an option to extract, this will extract the optifine mod that’s meant to be placed in the mods folder. This is a recent change. Otherwise you’re meant to double click it and make a new optifine profile which would install optifine alone without forge or fabric and obviously wouldn’t allow ...
Allocating more memory to minecraft made a world of difference in my 1% lows using complementary shaders. This can be done by going into Minecraft Launcher > Installations > Edit Profile > More Options > In where it says "-Xmx2G -XX:+Unlock" change the '2' to the amount of GB of RAM you want to allocate.
Potentially any mod because Optifine is a closed source, highly invasive, non-Forge mod which hacks the entire rendering system that almost all mods use, and Optifine could break anything with any update. If you encounter problems, your chain of debugging should be: Remove Optifine to see if it is related.
Optifine has plenty of bugs that break some features of other mods. As an example, with Optifine, I couldn’t even use key binds with the hack client that I use. With sodium I can. I’m no coding expert, but I never understood how visual aid mod could break key binds. Lol. Also, Sodium’s zoom feature is way better than Optifine’s.
i have to disagree, have been trying many many many optifine alternatives both alone and combined and i have yet to get more fps without it, most likely because i have a very old pc which is most likely why i get more fps with it in the first place, while the alternatives are "better" they're mostly made with newer pc's in mind most likely even if the "newer pc's" aren't really pc it really is ...
optifine does come with some drawbacks. first, getting it is a pain in the ass. be VERY CAREFUL about where/how you download it. it is a common target for scam downloads, and even the official safe method to download it puts you at risk of malware by forcing you to download it through a shady ad-filled mirror site. not trying to scare you, but ...
