Great Gull Island is a 17-acre (6.9 ha) island separating the Long Island and Block Island sounds, located approximately 0.4 miles (0.6 km) southwest of Little Gull Island. Both islands are located in the town of Southold in Suffolk County, New York, and lie roughly midway between Plum Island and Fishers Island.
The Academy moved to its current location in New London in 1932. On 21 September 1938 the 1938 New England hurricane severely damaged most of Fort Michie's garrison buildings. In 1937 Fort H. G. Wright's 10-inch and 12-inch guns were replaced, probably due to live-fire practice; the 10-inch guns by weapons taken from Fort Wetherill in Rhode Island.
