Later that year, Robby would eventually get his 1st career win in another Robby Gordon fashion, but this one loss is why we all love (or hate) Robby Gordon as a driver. This is probably my all time favorite fictional Robby Gordon paint scheme from 2004.
Kinda funny Robby Gordon story. For several years, I would end up in Vegas for an Autodesk CAD software conference the same week as the Awards Banquet...and so living in and flying in/out of Charlotte, I would end up on the same flights as some of the NASCAR community flying commercial. One year, I was on same flight coming home with Robby Gordon.
I always think the best way to describe Robby Gordon is, "Robby Gordon was his own worst enemy on the track." He definitely made things interesting and had incredible amounts of talent but always seem to get in his own way. On the flip side, I have heard and read from many people that he is a pretty good guy off the track.
Throwback to 2001 when Robby Gordon's 5 year contract with Morgan McClure Motorsports was terminated after just 5 races and then being replaced with the other guy that was also rumored to drive that same car during the 2000 offseason (Kevin Lepage)
Unfortunately, the attitudes of a young Harvick and Robby Gordon, alongside a surly Jeff Green that got the boot before a full season of being in the car, were a highly combustible mix that kneecapped the entire RCR team for a bit. Twenty years later, here we are again with two guys who seemingly never got along missing the championship race ...
Robby and Todd have been completely transparent throughout this entire process. I don’t see Polaris, Can-Am or any of the other manufacturers giving weekly updates on design, development, testing, manufacturing and availability for parts for their new vehicles. Yet, Speed is giving us these updates.
Robby is much like Tony, where he's got such raw talent but can't get out of his own way sometimes. Biggest difference between the two is, Robby never got the chance to run for a good-to-great team until much later in his career (first full-time season was 2002 at age 33), and by that point RCR was a mixed bag of various great runs but rough stretches.
Caution came out, Robby was leading, slowed, Ambrose didn't and spun Robby. Robby went to take his spot back, no harm no foul. NASCAR ruled that because Gordon didn't maintain pace speed, because he was spun, he didn't get his spot back, that started a chain of events that resulted in Robby spinning Ambrose and not listening to a NASCAR black flag.
Robby would end up with a 2nd place finish at the end of the day, leading 20 laps on the day. After the race, he made the statement, "Racing is racing. What goes around comes around." Later that year, Robby would eventually get his 1st career win in another Robby Gordon fashion, but this one loss is why we all love (or hate) Robby Gordon as a ...
