Fonts you import will not show up as “writing” fonts bc that’s a cricut system thing. If you download one of these fonts (say, September mornings), change the operation from “cut” to “draw -> pen”, then let cricut write something (probably no bigger than about 4inches), it should not be bubble letters.
Make sure you get correct license from your free font, I think this guide would help you when you use dafont for cricut.
Dafont.com, download and install then it will appear in your design space automatically. Filtering by system fonts will show you what you have installed. Also wordmark.it is a fun little website that will show you all in one place what the fonts would look like for any word or phrase you type in.

I made this quick screenshot image to describe the problem. Pretty much I can't seem to use downloaded fonts. I've tried refreshing my browser, starting a new canvas, using the Design Space client, using a different computer, etc. This issue seems to happen with fonts I've downloaded off of the Internet.

Creative Market and Creative Fabrica has some cheap fonts for commercial use, and sometimes have nice freebies for personal use. Font Space has plenty free fonts (just check if it's free only for personal, noncommercial, or can be used commercially). Google Fonts and Font Squirrel also has great free for commercial use fonts as well.
