Oh, one more, just as ppi and dpi get interchanged wrongly, people misuse the word font. A font is one typeface, one type style, and one type size, so 12 pt Helvetica Bold is not the same font as 10 pt Helvetica Bold. If the metal block goes in a different case, it is a different font.
Jan 26, 2012. FYI, Helvetica Neue is not a WIndows system font. It is a system font that is bundled with recent versions of the MacOS with some form of the words Helvetica and Neue in the name of the font. If you opened an InDesign document with that font missing, it is likely (but not necessarily) a document recently processed on a Macintosh.
Anyhow, I just want to get Helvetica Neue back. I probalby bought it and literally hundreds of other fonts that no longer work years back. But for now, I'll just try and get Helvetica back, sadly my clients will have to deal with the loss of an endless number of cool faces.

To directly respond to your question, there is no “free” version of Helvetica bundled with Windows and the version of Helvetica bundled with MacOS is a .dfont variant of TrueType Helvetica that may problematic for publishing use. Otherwise, Helvetica is a trademarked, commercial font.
Compare the two and you will soon see how vastly superior Helvetica is in all its nuances, even though over-use tends to dull one’s sensibility towards it. Doesn’t matter much for web text but for half decent typography always choose Helvetica over Arial if you have the choice. 1 Upvote. Translate.
