Figured it out! If you don’t want to use your desktop computer, you can use the Firefox mobile app on iPhone, then login to crossword section of nytimes, go to the crossword, then select the option “Request Desktop Site” on the Firefox menu. This does not correctly with Safari or Chrome mobile apps. 1. Reply.
Alphacross, a free Android app, has the syndicated version of the NYT crossword, which just means it's a few weeks older. LA Times is free. This probably won't work if you are not in the USA but your local library might have free daily access through its website. Crosshare.org is a really fun community with crosswords of various difficulties.

The NYT puzzle in the Seattle Times is always delayed by ~a month... they should be in the exact order, though -- so the days of the week line up correctly. That may be off-putting, but I believe that's how the syndication works. Aside from occasional themed holiday puzzles that are oddly delayed, it's not really a bad experience.
Seattle Times website has a week's worth of NYT crosswords at any given time, and it updates at 5 pm every day. Can do it in the browser or print it. It's on a similar delay (about a month, give or take). Been doing them for years that way.
