Timeline. Richard King arrives in Texas to join Mifflin Kenedy for river boat service during the Mexican War. Rancho de Santa Gertrudes (King Ranch) is founded with the purchase of the Rincon de Santa Gertrudis land grant. The first Rancho de Santa Gertrudes cattle drive to Northern markets is undertaken.
King’s vision for a great cattle ranch began to take shape. The 1860s were busy, challenging years for Richard King and his new bride Henrietta, the refined daughter of a Presbyterian minister from back East.
The King Ranch Legacy. In 1853, Captain Richard King purchased a creek-fed oasis in the Wild Horse Desert of South Texas, sparking generations of integrity, preservation, and innovation. King now covers 825,000 acres—more land than the state of Rhode Island.
Already expert stockmen and horsemen, these resilient denizens of the rugged Mexican range became known as Los Kineños – the King’s people. They and many generations of their descendants would go on to weave a large portion of the historical tapestry of King Ranch.
