Location: England. FWIW Lee Ranaldo’s three IMO 100% essential “rock song” albums from recent years also sound much better on vinyl than CD. Especially the latter two which were double LPs... Between the Times and the Tides (2012) Last Night on Earth (2013) Electric Trim (2017) BlueSpeedway, Apr 27, 2020. #9.
A bit confused that you included Ciccone Youth but not "Sonic Youth", the debut. That's officially an extended play. The debut is Confusion. Sonic Youth discography - Wikipedia. Though "the band consider it to be their debut album" it says. I don't know enough about them, hence this thread. Hollow Horse, Jul 14, 2019.
REISSUES: EVOL, BAD MOON RISING CD/LP NOW AVAILABLE, 2XLP/CD DAYDREAM NATION, CICCONE CD, s/t CD. Sister will be available on LP and CD in April 2016. Bad Moon Rising is now available on CD and LP on the band’s own label. Both editions will include extra tracks: Halloween, Flower and Satan is Boring (extra tracks on a download card w/ the LP).
Anyway, Sonic Youth hit the stage with way more energy and tightness than Husker Du. that guy musta thought I was B.S.ing him. Back to Evol, I think I like Goo a little more, but Evol is one scary masterpiece, perfect for exploring an old abandoned house on a hot dry day.
Location: Philadelphia, PA usa. The cover art for Sonic Youth's Goo is iconic. Of course the cover was created by Raymond Pettibon. I always thought Goo was tame compared to the work he did for SST. Culled from three 1985 gigs in the UK during a transitional and transcendent time in the band’s story, Sonic Youth’s ‘Walls Have Ears’ appeared as a 2LP set in 1986, not just a live album but an artful tapestry full of live experimentation with songs, between-song tape segues, darkness, humor and audio verité on par with elements of side B of ‘Master Dik’ to come later.
Sonic Nurse: compression city again Rather Ripped: and yet again To sum up, the best Sonic Youth sound to my ears is, in rough order: SYRs, s/t, Washing Machine, Confusion, NYC Ghosts and Flowers, DN, Dirty. Everything else is seriously flawed.
Sister was recorded in glorious all-tube analog at Sear Sound (and I think the newest album was, too). I always was partial to the "creepy/haunting" Sonic Youth than the "rockin'" one. Bad Moon Rising, Evol, and Sister were always my favorites, and Daydream Nation just didn't do it for me.
Sonic Youth - The Diamond Sea Sonic Youth - The Destroyed Room B-Sides And Rarities The 12” single says “first time vinyl single release, newly remastered from stereo analog tapes”. I’m assuming it might be a step up from the 2007 master for Destroyed Room.
There all good if you're a fan and know what to expect from Sonic Youth. Nothing sounds remixed. If it's from a cassette comp, it still sounds like it. 1 & 2 are all live. 3 is mostly rehearsal stuff on it along with some live.
