The 12 mini is an excellent iPhone, with the 13 mini bringing further refinements, thats probably the best way to summarise it. So slightly better camera, screen brightness, noticeably better battery life, reduced notch size, 128 Gb base storage and slightly faster, more efficient A15 chip. I got them both.

But, to be honest, since I switched to AirPods I haven’t really used the headphone jack anymore. Pricing: The 12 mini is rather expensive. The 64 GB SE was $499 upon release in 2016, whereas the mini is at $729 unlocked for the same memory capacity, and doesn’t include a charger (and also no USB-A charging cable).

It should be a good upgrade from 12 Pro Max. The camera is a great improvement with increased zoom (almost double). 120Hz display will be good. Always on display is another addition. 15 Pro Max will have better battery life. Performance should be better with the new chip along with 8 GB RAM.
Nov 13, 2020. #3. I’ve done a brief test. Short answer is: battery life between the 2 will be about the same. 12 mini has a 2227mAh battery, the XS has a 2658mAh battery. But the XS has a larger OLED panel to drive, and is also running the older A12 chip which is probably less power efficient.

A Mini-based SE can be marketed as having a larger screen than the old SE whilst being physically smaller and people will be more accepting of the $799 iPhone 16 price because they get a larger screen, meaning a Mini-based SE will cannibalise fewer iPhone 15/16 sales.
