SEVERE selenium deficiency is often mistaken for pneumonia. For your kids, start giving 2 ccs of the goat version of Vitamin E/selenium gel every other week, and once they have reached 6 months old, a Bo-Se shot. If they start showing any severe symptoms of selenium def., give Bo-Se.

Selenium is a world wide deficiency and is easily fixed. Copper deficiency - Molybdenum excess is more complex and can be tied up with iron. Because I keep sheep, putting copper in the fertilizer is not an option so twice a year all cattle are injected for selenium and copper.
Bo-Se is a selenium/Vitamin E combination shot. It is for areas that are selenium deficient. Goats with selenium deficiency will have weak kids born and can have problems with retained placentas and issues in labor. It can also cause soft pasterns.
Both my regular vets recommend Bo-Se 2-4 weeks before delivery for selenium deficiency but we live in a very deficient area. Selenium deficiency can cause both delivery problems and kid problems. We give Bo-Se at breeding and then again at the 2-4 weeks before kidding.
