Here are the steps and yes you can enable it again simply by logging in again. Click on the onedrive taskbar icon. Then click on help and settings and then again on settings. Then in the pop up window click on the first tab (settings) Untick the last option that says "save space and download files as you use them".

The desktop picture I took (shown above) is actually from my wife's account on this computer. I just logged into her account and, sure enough, the gray X's are gone. However, they have ALL been replaced with the curved arrow indicating "shortcut". These are NOT shortcuts. They are word documents, PDF files, etc.
Click on the cloud icon in System Tray at right end of task bar to see if they're there. If so then you'll need to sign into OneDrive so they are sync'd properly. The same could be true for Google Drive sync or backup which works the same way if you have that, too.

This needs to be fixed, cause even the Xbox 360 had way more compatibility than this machine shows currently because it will play the games that this brand new console refuses to do. An example given, Culdcept Saga is a relatively easy game to emulate, yet refuses to play on Series X. I know what you are going to say is that they are working on it.
